A conversation with Leeds contributors to the UK Committee on Climate Change net-zero report* and the Leeds Carbon Roadmap

*Net Zero – The UK’s contribution to stopping global warming

Register to attend

Leeds researchers involved in authoring the seminal net-zero report, that underpinned the UK commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and the Leeds Carbon Roadmap, will provide an overview of net-zero and, importantly, highlight the current gaps in the research necessary to achieve it.

Open to Leeds staff and students, this seminar will have short talks from: Piers Forster, Andy Gouldson  Anne OwenChris Smith, Julia Steinberger and Peter Taylor. To follow there will be a Q&A with the authors. This seminar will be chaired by the Dean for Interdisciplinary Research, Stuart Taberner and forms part of the University of Leeds Big Conversations series.

Background

In order to limit the increase in global mean temperature to well below 2°C – pursuing efforts for 1.5°C – a growing number of countries, cities and organisations have set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050, or even before.

Delivering net-zero will have significant ramifications reaching across the economy and society, as decarbonisation is accelerated, demanding extensive and ambitious research to meet the unprecedented scale and complexity of the challenges involved.

The seminar is part of a new net-zero research initiative led by the Priestley International Centre for Climate and Energy Leeds. The initiative will bring together the diverse academic community at Leeds to deliver research that underpins the drive towards net-zero emissions.

A vegetarian and vegan networking lunch will be provided in the School of Earth and Environment foyer after the event. Please register here
