Debbie Rosen, SB64 Delegate

What is your area of work and how does it relates to SB64?

I work closely with Piers to produce the Indicators of Global Climate Change (IGCC) report which will be launched at SB64.  This is the fourth edition of IGCC, providing annual updates of key global climate indicators that can help us to understand the state of the climate system and how it is changing. We launch in Bonn to make sure that the information we produce directly reaches decision makers attending the conference, providing them with timely and scientific information on policy-relevant global climate indicators that can be used in their preparations for the upcoming COP summit at the end of the year.  This includes a press conference, evening reception, and lots of communication outputs aimed at simplifying what can be an overwhelming amount of information!

What are the big issues that SB64 needs to address?

In terms of fundamental climate science, SB64 needs to make sure that it addresses critical gaps in Earth observation systems and threats to global observing systems due to withdrawal of funding, so we can maintain an up-to-date, robust picture of how and why our climate is changing.

What are your hopes for the conference?

I hope that scientists, negotiators, and stakeholders can continue to work together to make sure that complex data can be translated into regional and global climate solutions; and that we see more "coalitions of the willing" whereby ambitious nations come together, finding ways to make progress and avoid getting caught up in tactics that can undermine the formal negotiations.
