In 2023 the Priestley Centre announced an expanded remit, taking its activities beyond research, to include innovation, knowledge exchange and collaboration on postgraduate education.
Strategic roles
Professor John Barrett has been appointed as Deputy Director for Policy and Engagement. Professor Richard Beardsworth takes up the role of Principal Fellow.
Dr Shona Smith, Head of the Priestley Centre, said: “John and Richard are great appointments for the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures.
They take up important strategic positions in the centre and bring a wealth of experience that will help cement our capability and reputation for research-led climate action.
The leadership team look forward to working with them as we grow the Priestley Centre and its activities"

Global politics
Professor Richard Beardsworth is Professor of International Relations and Head of the School of Politics. His research focuses on the politics of climate change and he co-chairs the University’s taskforce on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
