Area of work and how it relates to COP30:
I have contributed to six chapters of the recently published 2nd Global Tipping Points Report investigating potential casading societal impacts that could be triggered by Earth System Tipping Points being breached and exploring governance options including community engagement in Earth System Tipping Points governance. This is important because we have already breached the first Earth System Tipping Points, Coral Reef Dieback, and we are increasingly likely to trigger other Earth System Tipping Point with potentially catastrophic consequences, which we are ill equipped to face.
What are the big issues that COP30 needs to address? What are your hopes for the negotiations?
COP30 needs to start discussing Earth System Tipping Points and I hope that at this year's COP Earth System Tipping Points and the governance of Earth System Tipping Points will get onto the agenda. Other big issues include recent developments of climate commitment retreats, e.g. in the finance sector where the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) has ceased its operations.
What's your message for world leaders at COP30?
Do not only listen to the loud minority trying to derail climate action, listen to the silent majority, who wants to see climate action! Do not shy away from engaging your citizens in climate action. Climate assemblies have repeatedly shown that citizens can make informed and ambitious decisions. Engage with the Global Citizen Assembly.
