Abstract

Geovation is Ordnance Survey’s open innovation network, accelerator and Hub, with a successful track record of running online challenges to address specific community needs, where geography, technology, and good design aid solutions. Everything happens somewhere and geography and geographic information are the glue that connect people, places, processes, and planet. They are powerful tools for understanding the local impact of the global challenges we face and in developing sustainable solutions. Innovation projects that focus on people’s needs have both doubled the success rate of, and 70% higher market share than, those that do not.

To achieve Greener, Smarter Communities we could use our natural green and blue assets far more effectively. In doing so we could address some of our most pressing social, economic, and environmental problems, more affordably to:

  • Improve health and well-being
  • Support the local economy
  • Enable sustainable living
  • Enhance the natural environment

The Geovation Challenge

The Challenge will launch in the summer with a series of workshops and entrants can submit their ideas online. Winners will be invited to develop their ideas into prototype ventures during a 2-3 day Geovation Camp where the winners will be introduced to service design principles, be able to test the principles of their venture and will learn to build a compelling pitch. Ideas with the potential to achieve the greatest impact will be supported through the Geovation growth accelerator programme or through other channels; to be developed, launched and accelerated as new, sustainable ventures.

We are running a 4 hour facilitated workshop to unpack the unmet needs associated with Greener, Smarter Communities and Cities in Britain. The output will be used as stimuli for the Challenge. In addition to stimulating discussion with stakeholders across the industry, we will also be providing lunch.
